Whether you are the picture of perfect health or you live with chronic health conditions, a personal trainer can guide you in a lifestyle that could improve your function, mobility, strength, endurance and mood. According to ACE Fitness (American Council on Exercise), investing in personal training can benefit you in ten ways. The majority of people decide to invest in a personal trainer because they lack the motivation to begin a routine on their own or find it hard to get motivated each day.

They are trained to not only help you identify barriers and obstacles but also, how to overcome them and find consistency in a program. Amber Long, M.Ed. quotes, “Fitness can be confusing. There is a lot of information to sort through. Eat this, not that. Cardio before or after strength training?” Having the individual attention of a personal trainer will prompt you with the knowledge and confidence in seeking a healthier lifestyle.

Using their expertise in weight rooms, fitness equipment, exercise programming and safety, personal trainers can boost your confidence while helping you avoid injuries. As an athlete, personal trainers are educated on building a sport specific program fit for you to improve your athletic ability and reduce the risk of injury during preseason and postseason.

Many people have laid aside the idea of New Year’s Resolutions in favor of The Word of the Year. They head into the New Year with a meaningful word of their choosing. It’s an attempt to simplify a goal and serves as a reminder throughout the year. For some, that word may be “peace” or “joy”. For me, I knew it wasn’t a noun that I needed.

I have so, so many good intentions, but I don’t always act on them. As friends and family can attest, I showed great interest in kayaking for years before I ever got out on the water. But then I did, finally. And I absolutely loved it. My only regret was not acting on my interest sooner. The intention was certainly there, but my action was not. I then thought that maybe my word should be a verb to help get me in the headspace to take action. However, there are so many things I want to do, how could I just settle on one?

Then, I remembered how rewarding it was to finally be out on the water in my own kayak. Finally, I thought to myself, finally is my word!

What would prompt your ‘finally’?

Do you have dreams and desires to try new things and have new experiences in the New Year? What has been holding you back? How great would it feel to look back at the end of 2024 and say you finally did what you had set your heart on?

If you have been yearning for a reset on your health & fitness journey, look no further than the Cantrell Center 5K & 1 Mile. This is the only 5K I know of geared specifically for the first-timer.

The holidays are fast approaching!

What’s your holiday game plan? In the fitness world, this time of year usually generates excuses that lead to decreases in attendance at the gym, pool, classes, etc. You would think that it would be exact opposite! Though we complain about not wanting to put on weight during the holidays, it’s usually a time when we frequently forego one of the most important avenues that will help to keep those pounds off!

If you are a member here at the Cantrell Center, you should be familiar with follow-up appointments. For those of you aren’t members, these are complimentary appointments we offer exclusively to our active wellness members. They are typically scheduled every 2 months with one of our expert Wellness Trainers. These appointments are designed to help us track each member’s progress in their exercise routine.

During the months of September and October we begin scheduling into November and December for the next follow up. Scheduling during these time frames leads to questions such as: “Do you want to come the week before or after Thanksgiving/Christmas?” I bet you can guess what most responses are: “Before!” (Though every once in a while, I will have someone schedule it for after, hoping that it will keep them on track knowing they will be weighed the next week!) But, for the most part, everyone knows that the holidays are a time of fun and fellowship where you get to eat lots of yummy dishes and desserts that you may only get once a year. We have to understand that we CAN enjoy the holiday food and fun without it costing us dearly on the scale! I try to encourage my members to go into the holidays with a game plan.

Holiday Game Plan

Don’t sacrifice your exercise routine! “I have a party tonight”, “Company is coming in”, “I have a lot of cooking to do” are just a few of the reasons some might skip their workout during the holidays. Schedule your exercise like it is an appointment that you cannot miss! Instead of thinking “I have company coming which means I can’t go to the gym today”, tell yourself, “My company is coming this afternoon when I usually go to the pool so I’m going to need to go to the class this morning and knock it out before they get here!” Don’t sacrifice your well-being when all you need to do is readjust your schedule a little bit.

You can still enjoy your favorite holiday foods without feeling super guilty! Along with keeping up with your exercising, be sure to watch your portions of the high-calorie holiday favorites. Keep other meals light when you have a big dinner or lunch planned.

Don’t stress yourself out with the number on the scale! Everyone’s weight is going to fluctuate within a couple of pounds from day to day. The holidays are a time when we seem to obsess over that number even more. Don’t compare your weight in the morning one day to your weight in the evening the following day or what your scale said in comparison to the doctor’s scale. Whether you are weighing every day or only once a month, pick a time (usually first thing in the morning is good) to consistently weigh and wear the same clothing or lack thereof depending on your weighing place. (i.e. the comfort of your own home)!

Now Put It Into Practice!

I hope that by putting these 3 tips into practice, it will help keep you consistent with your routine this holiday season! If you’re an active Cantrell Center wellness member in need of accountability, call us to schedule a follow up! Simply call 478-333-6777 to schedule one at no charge today. We are here to help! If you’re not a member, but would like to be, give us a call at (478) 333-6777. We’d be happy to discuss the details concerning joining our wellness program. Either way, I hope you enjoy the holidays and time with your family and friends!

Patients and wellness members know from the moment they come into the Cantrell Center that there is a difference. Patients of the Cantrell Center see results because they understand that their commitment to the treatment plan matters. Our highly skilled physical therapists take the time needed to evaluate the specific problems of each patient. We educate our patients on the findings and take action to treat your symptoms to make you feel better. As your pain decreases, we work closely with our patients to get to the root cause of their problems so they can really get better. Many times we can help resolve the problems completely! If the problem is chronic, we help you learn how to manage it the best and most pain-free way possible. This puts you back in the driver’s seat of life. This IS success to our patients and to us as physical therapists.

So the question is: Do you just want to feel better temporarily? Or, Do you really want to get better? Most of the time, you can do both. When your doctor prescribes physical therapy, you have a choice about where you go for care. Insist on going for treatment to make both happen.

New Year, Same Me (Rolling My Eyes at Weight Loss Commercials Ahead of the New Year)

Is it just me or are weight loss commercials ahead of the New Year almost as annoying as political ads? They seem to prey on the people most desperate for change. They wave around something shiny and new — the latest and greatest — frequently communicating the not-so-subtle message that you are less than and for that very reason you need this one life-changing, be-all and end-all product or service.

What if feeling good in your body didn’t have to be like that?

What if getting in shape didn’t require a fancy gym membership or expensive new gym equipment?

What if the dollars spent to get fit were miniscule and the return was oh-so-much higher?

What if the small investment you made went on to make positive ripples across the community from our local Children’s Hospital to local businesses and organizations?

#Cantrell5K2023

This isn’t just about selling 5K registrations to us. We’re here to sell you a dream- a dream maybe you never thought attainable. We’re here to tell you that it is. We have runners that travel across state lines to come out to our 5K. Avid runners are certainly welcome and many flock to our event to compete for our cash prizes, yet that doesn’t speak to our mission.

You see, we’ve been at this a while. 2023 will be our fourteenth time hosting this unique health initiative. Our heart has always been for the first-timer. Our aim is to reach the person who never dreamed they could complete a 5K. We want to let them know they CAN do it! In a given year, we’ve seen first-timers comprise as many as 46% of participants. Of course, that percentage falls when one-time first-timers come back to participate in the Cantrell 5K year after year. We’re happy to welcome them back each year as it’s a boost of confidence and gets us thinking, “Hey, we must be doing something right!” Yet, we’re still hoping to reach the first-timers we know are still out there and place them on a different trajectory — from defeat to renewed hope, from desperation to expectation.

For less than $30, we want to help jumpstart you into a healthy lifestyle using the 14th Annual Cantrell Center 5K & 1 Mile presented by Boland Prosthetic & Orthotic Center on Saturday, February 25th, 2023 as your launching pad.

It’s been said that the energy on the day of the Cantrell 5K is palpable. On that day, thousands of all ages, shapes, sizes, and backgrounds come together with a common goal: to get moving while raising funds for our local Children’s Hospital, part of Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals.

The Cantrell Center 5K & 1 Mile presented by Boland Prosthetic & Orthotic Center benefits our local Children’s Hospital, Atrium Health Navicent Beverly Knight Olson Children’s Hospital, where no child is turned away regardless of ability to pay. To date, we’re proud to say we’ve raised over $38,000.00 for the kids.

Some more fun facts:

You can walk or run either the 5K (3.1 miles) or the 1 mile

We give away a host of resources including a FREE 8 week training program and free expert advice from our Certified Wellness Trainers for the duration of that 8 week program & MORE!

Your participation includes a colorful long sleeve shirt and a race packet full of goodies

To encourage you to keep up the momentum, we’ll have “race row” present on race day. This way, you can sign up for your next local run/walk event right after crossing the Cantrell 5K’s Finish Line!

You can fundraise through RaceEntry & get free entry or earn back your registration by sharing your unique referral link, plus there’s a 10% discount for 4 or more registrations.
Are you in?

If after reading this, you’re still not ready to take the leap, I hope you’ll at least look at those weight loss commercials a little differently. Take a step back and give yourself some grace. Start where you are with what you have. We’d love to help!

Common Misconceptions about Physical Therapy

An orthopedist or other specialist has to send me to PT.

Your primary care doctor can send you to physical therapy before you are ever sent to a specialist which may mean that you do not have to see a specialist at all. This, in turn, will save you time and money. Other health care providers that can refer you to PT include OB/GYN doctors (who are used like primary care providers by many younger females particularly), chiropractors, dentists, and orthodontists.

I have to go to the PT at my doctor’s office/wherever he refers me.

Many orthopedic offices have their own PT clinics and will refer you to their on-staff therapists. Sometimes just the way the paper work is done and the fact that the PT office is down the hall may make you feel like you HAVE to go to their clinic, but you don’t. You can go to ANY clinic that you want when being referred to physical therapy.

Physical therapy hurts. No pain no gain.

While some injuries and conditions are more uncomfortable than others and may take working through some pain to make the gains needed, our goal is ALWAYS to minimize your pain while you are doing therapy. We offer many approaches to therapy and treatments that can minimize pain if you are especially hesitant to get started for that reason. Also, while attending therapy, let us know if something hurts so we can make it feel better—that’s what you’re here for!

Physical therapy won’t help. I just need surgery.

Many diagnoses and ailments can be treated with PT without the need for surgery to happen at all. While surgery is needed for certain injuries, we help many people avoid all kinds of surgery including back, neck, shoulder, and others. Now with that being said, getting good results from PT does take work on your part. Keeping up with your home exercise program and doing what your therapist recommends is vital to your recovery so you must do your part to give it a fair chance.

I can look up what to do online and just do some exercises on my own.

While the internet is a vast wealth of knowledge, getting a thorough evaluation and knowing exactly which exercises are best for you is crucial in helping you get the best results. Some exercises you may find online for a certain pain or problem could actually be harmful if you do not know the underlying cause of your issue. Here at the Cantrell Center, we always do a thorough evaluation so that we can set up an individualized program that specifically addresses your needs. If you prefer doing things on your own or have a high insurance co-pay, we can often set you up with a good home program and see you periodically to update and progress it as needed. Coming in for that evaluation will ensure you get on the right track!

PT is too expensive. I don’t think my insurance will cover it.

Health care can be expensive, but most insurances do cover physical therapy. If you do have a high co-pay or are without insurance, do not let your health suffer due to a lack of coverage. We are happy to work out payment plans with you so that you can get the care you need without hurting your wallet. Also, when possible, we can try to minimize the frequency of your sessions to further minimize your cost.

I have had PT before, and it didn’t help.

Many people are under the impression that they have had physical therapy before because they have been charged for PT services or been told they are having PT. While some health care facilities may charge you a physical therapy service (for example, a doctor may give you a handout of exercises, or a chiropractor may apply electrical stimulation to you after your adjustment), you have not had true physical therapy if you have not been evaluated by a licensed physical therapist then treated by either a licensed physical therapist or licensed physical therapist assistant.

The best place to receive physical therapy is from an independently owned and licensed physical therapy facility like the Cantrell Center. Even if you have received physical therapy services from a licensed physical therapist or physical therapist assistant, not all physical therapy is equal. You may have had physical therapy at a place that sent you off to do some exercises on your own, but did not really guide your care. Here at the Cantrell Center we strive to give each patient individualized, quality care. You will receive a thorough evaluation followed by specialized treatment designed to meet your needs. I have seen many patients who have had physical therapy at other facilities who realize the difference in care once they are treated here.

Cantrell Members: Have you had a Follow up lately?

As a member of the Cantrell Wellness Center, you have the option to meet with a trainer periodically for what we call a “follow up appointment” to check vitals and certain measurements to see how your progress is going. Remember when you joined and had your consultation? The trainer checked your weight, body fat percentage and BMI, heart rate, oxygen saturation and blood pressure. During a follow up, the trainer will reassess each of those numbers and compare to the previous numbers. And dependent on the results, the trainer will give appropriate feedback or suggestions. Why do we check those specific things? Each of those measurements gives us a general idea of how a person is doing physically.

Assessment Measurements

Weight: We check this as a baseline measurement at the consultation and then at each follow up.

Blood pressure: the average blood pressure (BP) should be around 120/80, but this will vary from person to person. Keeping a regular check of your blood pressure can help you see one aspect of progress. Typically, as one becomes more physically fit, the heart becomes stronger and beats more efficiently which in turn can help lower your blood pressure.

Heart Rate: An average resting heart should be 60-80 beats per minute. This will fluctuate throughout the day depending on your activity. Again, as you become more physically fit, this helps to strengthen your heart. Because of that, heart rate may decrease showing improvement in how that muscle works.

Oxygen Saturation: This number tells how well oxygen is getting distributed through your body. In healthy individuals, this number should be in the 90’s but more preferably 95-100. As you become more physically fit, circulation increases as your heart is stronger and able to pump more efficiently, thus increasing your body’s ability to use the oxygen you are taking in.

Body fat percentage/BMI: Body fat percentage (BF%) and Body Mass Index(BMI) are two different things. We check these with an Omron hand held machine. BF% will change and decrease as you build more lean muscle and burn fat. BMI is a weight to height ratio that will increase when weight goes up or decrease when weight goes down.

The good news is that physical therapy can help relieve your symptoms.

Here’s a brief description for those of you who have no idea what sciatica is: Sciatica is pain radiating along the sciatic nerve. This nerve begins at the lower part of the spine, travels through the buttock region, and down each leg. It can be intermittent or constant depending on how much pressure is on the nerve or how irritated the nerve is.

The following techniques can help relieve the pressure from your sciatic nerve. Two positions that are particularly helpful are an ‘all four’ position and ‘side lying’ position. Supine activities or lying flat on your back during your third trimester is like suffocation city! Get into which ever position is comfortable for you and just breathe. These positions help to relieve pressure on the sciatic nerve by decompressing the spine. The key to decompressing the spine in these positions is flexing your spine (rounding your back). By flexing your spine you open up or create space between the facet joints along the spine, especially on the lumbar spine. As your belly grows out front, your body adjusts by leaning back in order to keep your center of gravity. This leaning back or extension of the spine causes the extra compression on the nerves. Therefore, getting in a position to decrease that lumbar compression will in turn decrease your pain. If these positional changes do not help, you may need the assistance of a physical therapist to help you resolve your issues. A physical therapy prescription from your obstetrician is all you need for this.

What is costochondritis?

Mayoclinic.com defines costochondritis as inflammation of the cartilage that connects a rib to the breastbone (sternum). Strain (due to coughing or repeated movements) or trauma can cause costochondritis, but can also come on for unknown reasons. Due to the location of this pain, it can often feel like chest pain that could warrant the need to rule out any heart-related causes first though.

Rib pain can include costochondritis but could also be in the side of the rib cage (rather than at the front at the sternum) and could also be caused for the various reasons mentioned above.

Physical therapy can help rib pain of all sorts including costochondritis through a variety of treatment options.

Here at the Cantrell Center, I have treated rib pain and costochondritis with a combination of treatment approaches including manual therapy; Postural Restoration activities and other exercises that may include breathing techniques, stretching, and inhibition/relaxation techniques; and aquatic therapy.

We can help!

Rib pain and costochondritis can be very painful and become chronic or long-lasting. Sometimes the very things that might alleviate the pain in one moment can cause the pain to increase in another moment. This fact can make trying to relieve such pain on your own a frustrating and often fruitless task. I know this from patients’ experiences, but also personally from having had severe rib pain myself prior to becoming a physical therapist. I spent quite a while with it coming and going until I knew the right things to do for it.

If you are experiencing rib pain or costochondritis, give us a call at (478) 953-3535 or stop by the front desk to schedule an appointment. We can help!
